Revisited 2011/12 Predicted Premier League, La Liga and Serie A Tables

June 4, 2012

August 9th 2011 saw an attempt at guessing what the final tables of the above leagues would be. Now we’ve arrived at this moment, we can all laugh at our failures or be smug at getting anything at all correct.

First of all is a reminder of the predictions made here prior to the beginning of this season. Correct predicted placings are in italics, while those incorrect have the individual deviation from prediction to actual finish in brackets (for example, Chelsea were predicted as 1st but finished 6th therefore the deviation is -5).

PREMIER LEAGUE

1. Chelsea (-5)
2. Manchester United
3. Manchester City (+2)
4. Liverpool (-4)
5. Arsenal (-2)
6. Tottenham Hotspur (-2)
7. Fulham (-2)
8. Everton (+1)
9. Sunderland (-4)
10. Bolton Wanderers (-8)
11. Stoke City (-3)
12. Aston Villa (-4)
13. West Bromwich Albion (+3)
14. Wolverhampton Wanderers (-6)
15. Newcastle United (+10)
16. Norwich City (+4)
17. Wigan Athletic (+2)
18. Blackburn Rovers (-1)
19. Queens Park Rangers (+2)
20. Swansea City (+9)

One prediction correct. Let’s concentrate on the positive. Plenty incorrect with the deviations of Newcastle United and Swansea standing out. An average deviation of 3.7 places confirms overall disappointment.

LA LIGA

1. Barcelona (-1)
2. Real Madrid (+1)
3. Valencia
4. Athletic Bilbao (-6)
5. Villarreal (-13)
6. Malaga (+2)
7. Sevilla (-2)
8. Atletico Madrid (+3)
9. Espanyol (-5)
10. Sporting Gijon (-9)
11. Mallorca (+3)
12. Real Zaragoza (-4)
13. Getafe (+2)
14. Real Betis (+1)
15. Real Sociedad (+3)
16. Granada (-1)
17. Osasuna (+10)
18. Racing Santander (-2)
19. Rayo Vallecano (+4)
20. Levante (+14)

All of one correct prediction, albeit the easiest possible in Valencia finishing 3rd again. An average place deviation of 4.3 completes a picture of incorrectness.

SERIE A

1. Milan (-1)
2. Inter (-4)
3. Napoli (-2)
4. Juventus (+3)
5. Lazio (+1)
6. Roma (-1)
7. Udinese (-4)
8. Genoa (-9)
9. Palermo (-7)
10. Cagliari (-5)
11. Fiorentina (-2)
12. Parma (+4)
13. Chievo (+3)
14. Bologna (+5)
15. Catania (+4)
16. Atalanta (+4)
17. Novara (-2)
18. Cesena (-2)
19. Siena (+5)
20. Lecce (+2)

Not a single one correct, so that’s the end of that. Oddly, a place deviation of 3.5 therefore being less than the Premier League and La Liga but let’s put this all to bed and look forward to next year’s inevitable mess of incorrect predictions.
